About Us

Welcome to our congregation. Our congregation is a member of  the national Evangelical Lutheran Synod (ELS) with headquarters in Mankato, MN and missions in Chile, Peru, Republic of Czechoslovakia, and South Korea. There are appoximately 140 congregations of the ELS with a total of 21,422 members.

The ELS is not to be confused with the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America (ELCA). We are a completely different fellowship of congregations and missions which are devoted to preaching the Bible as the inspired Word of God calling all to repent and believe in Christ Jesus for forgiveness and salvation. The doctrinal commitment of our congregation is to the inspired Word of God as found in the Bible and the theology of the Lutheran Confessional writings as a faithful exposition of the teachings of the Bible.

The first service of Faith Lutheran was on September 14, 1980 under the name Wayfarers Chapel of Ventura which met in the Holiday Inn of Anaheim across from Disneyland. Since then, we relocated a few times yet, through the support of members and God’s grace, we are blessed to continue in ministry. Most recently, we are holding services in the Northwood Community Center (Yale & Bryan Sts.) Irvine CA.

Pastor Stehr has been our pastor since November of 1998. He is originally from Canada, graduating from Concordia Lutheran Theological Seminary, St. Catharines, Ontario in 1983. He has served congregations in Western Canada, St. Louis, and Massachusetts with the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod for sixteen years before joining the ELS and becoming our pastor.

The members of our congregation travel from various communities throughout Orange County to attend this church because of our dedication to worship and serve The Lord in the context of Confessional Lutheran teaching and liturgical services based in God’s Word and because of the family atmosphere of our friendship in Christ.

Every member and guest is important to our Savior and, therefore, important to the congregation. We pray that that God’s Spirit would led you to visit us in the Sunday Divine Service.

There are many congregations in Irvine and throughout Orange County. Maybe the Spirit is leading you to acknowledge the frustration of services that seem to focus more on the congregation and ‘ministry program’ than on a correct understanding and application of God’s Word. Your heart may be simply longing for a noble service whose tradtion gives glory to God alone.

We recognize that our congregation is not for everyone. But maybe this is just the right place for you and your family. We do not reinvent a ‘mission statement’ but take our lead from the Biblical description to ‘preach the kingdom of God and teach concerning the Lord Jesus Christ with all openness’ (Acts 28:31).

Our pastor and members believe that God has a niche and purpose for our ministry in the area. We trust that your faith and hope in the Lord would be nourished and strengthened through the service and that you will be encouraged by the Christian love shared in our congregation. We welcome your inquiry and look forward to meeting you and your family.

Hello Pastor Bill – It was great meeting and working with you at Christ the King painting project this past week. Thanks also for the member produced key chain cross. It will go on one of our rings when we return home. God’s continued blessings on your work in Irvine. Whenever we pray “Thy Kingdom come”, we think of our many called workers, serving our Lord in countless ways. We thank you for that service.

Greetings Mark; Are you back in the area? I heard at the recent Circuit Mission Rally in Lake Havasu City, AZ that you were planning a return. Seems they didn’t exhaust you yet? Anyway, my pleasure to meet you and spread some paint together. May our labor echo the resounding Good news of God’s Word of forgiveness and promise and echo the joy of worship and praise of His people.

On another topic, I have to admit I put a lot of work into posting on this site but lately focused more time on other social media platforms. Time to turn a bit more attention here again. Case in point, I just responded to an inquiry a visitor to our blog site posted. We’ll see where the Lord directs this. Anyway, here we are. Soil for the Lord’s Seed to grow.

I have an appointment in Long Beach next Tuesday afternoon. If you’re in the area, perhaps I can drop by after the appointment.

Prayer for God’s grace and peace for you and family. Pastor Stehr
